[description of book] LO-KAN Lokan Lokan is an island of Muslim culture in the Indian Ocean. Lokan is about 2,100 square miles in size and has a population of about 8,000 people. Majority of the population is Muslim. The island is located four hours southeast of Sri Lanka and is part of the Maldives. A Muslim majority island that is sparsely populated, Lokan has an unemployment rate of about 95 per cent. About 10 percent of the population is employed by the government on a state-funded contract basis. Formerly a war-time settlement the island was inhabited by the French, Dutch and British. However, just after World War II the British permanently withdrew from the country. The French left in 1949. The Soviet Union occupied the country in a war of liberation in 1958. In 1968 a local uprising took place that was ruthlessly suppressed by the government. In 1978, a coup d'etat took place in which former opposition leader and president, Ibrahim Nasir, was arrested and eventually banished from the country. The island became a state with its own parliament in 1976. Lokan has a Muslim majority population. The Muslims follow the Islamic law. Most of the people on the island are farmers who grow rice, coconut and vegetable. Livestock and dairying are practiced, but there are very few animals in the island. There is hardly any mining activity and the people do not have a large level of modern technology. The island faces a number of environmental and humanitarian issues including the lack of water, deforestation and soil erosion. If you are interested in the Muslim culture on the island there are resources available to help students learn about the religion and people living on the island. The book is for Grade 9 (to Grade 12) students. The book contains 66 passages divided into three categories. There are 20 short stories for the students to read. There are 10 concise oral-conversation dialogues for the students to practise. There is also an outline to follow during the writing of the story or dialogue. Use the outline as a guideline to get you started. Each section contains a number of graded exercise questions that challenge the students to think through different aspects of the story. For example, all the students must talk about the ending of the story, what is the conflict/problem, how the characters are portrayed, etc. The outline will help you develop material for the oral-conversation sections. If you follow the outline thoroughly, your students will gain confidence to share what 55cdc1ed1c
